Tyngsboro, MA – More than 60 corporate sponsors and 136 golfers came together at Vesper Country Club on Monday, May 21, 2007 for the 5th Annual Big Brothers Big Sisters ICI Golf Classic.

Sponsors including International Computerware, Lowell General Hospital, the Lowell Sun, Curran & Doherty Financial Partners, and Horizon Air contributed to the charity tournament along with 34 foursomes. “We surpassed our fund raising goal of $30,000 for the event,” said tournament chair and Big Brothers Big Sisters Board Member Bud Mercuri. “This was an important fund raiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters. The response we received from the community was heartening.”
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Lowell is the region’s foremost mentoring program. The agency’s mission is to provide quality volunteer and professional services to assist children in achieving their highest potential as they grow to become responsible adults. In addition to traditional One-to-One and School-based Mentoring programs, which match trained adult volunteers with at-risk youth, Big Brothers Big Sisters operates several ground-breaking programs that were developed to address specific community needs. These programs encompass a range of youth services and issues including: violence/gang prevention, health and wellness, community service, civic involvement, leadership development, tutoring, and college readiness.

One of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ newest programs is Destination College, which provides low-income youth with targeted tutoring and mentoring services to help them graduate high school and successfully matriculate to college. As part of the program, juniors and seniors are matched with volunteer college application advisors.

James Pinzino, ICI President and tournament platinum sponsor, said “I remember how important it was growing up to have someone to turn to for advice and assistance. ICI is pleased to support the important mentoring programs at Big Brothers Big Sisters.” Pinzino presented college sponsorships to four Lowell High seniors enrolled in Destination College:

Riedanak Yan, $1,000, Mass College of Art
Mike Keu, $500, Fitchburg State College
Billy Nguyen, $500, Fitchburg State College
Rathna Mao, $500 Salem State/MCC
Sovereign Bank senior vice president William A. Hardy also presented a $1,000 college scholarship for Lowell High senior Sara Thanongsinh who will be attending Worcester State College.
